University of Iowa Libraries

Iowa City, IA

The University of Iowa Libraries recently photographed several palm leaf manuscripts as part of a larger project to enhance the discoverability and accessibility of early manuscripts held in Special Collections. High quality digital images create a new mode of access for students and faculty conducting research on these manuscripts or studying them in the classroom.

UI Center for the Book scholars, in particular, study manuscripts as objects – their form, structure, and function. The UI Libraries is also eager to collaborate with scholars and researchers who can offer more robust descriptions of the palm leaf manuscripts.

With the high resolution images produced by the Phase One IQ1 80MP digital camera back, the UI Libraries can share digital images that relay a manuscript’s color and texture to scholars who may never visit Iowa City but could provide new insights on manuscripts in the collection at Iowa.
